LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour News

Keep up-to-date with the new developments.

A 30-second video teaser [WARNING: large file - 25 MB] by Carlo Villareal is available here.

The 2012 commemorative jerseys are as of now available for purchase at all Rideaway Bicycle Shops in San Antonio.

Bike inspections are not required to ride in the 5th Annual LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour.  However, riders are strongly encouraged to bring their bike in to any of the three Ride Away Bicycles shops in San Antonio, any of the REI stores in Austin or Round Rock, or Hill Country Bicycle Works in Fredericksburg or Kerrville at least two weeks prior to the day of the event (March 24).  These sponsors have graciously agreed to perform a basic Mechanical Inspection free of charge to identify any major issues with the equipment.  Of course, anything found where the rider would want the sponsor’s techs to correct would be subject to prevailing sponsor shop rates. Help ensure that you’re mechanically equipped for an enjoyable ride!

Our friends at RaceTechs have worked the kinks out and as of now online registration is available again. To take you there, click here: online registration.

Unfortunately, there’s a glitch with our online registration. It’s temporarily unavailable. We’re trying to fix it ASAP. We’ll notify when things are working again. Check here or at the tour’s website for updates.

The mail-in registration form is available for download here.

For your convenience, though, we strongly recommend online registration.

Let’s start with the most important news: REI has donated a $1,000-plus Novara Strada 2012 Bike that will be raffled. For details about the bike and the raffle, go to the website/raffle.

Jerseys – in a new design – will be available again. Check the design out on the website.

The t-shirts [we guarantee one for each participant registering before February 29, 2012] are of a new material: technical t-shirts with a wick-dry capability.

We have added an 85-mile route.

Online registration is available now via RaceTechs: click here.

For details, check the tour’s website.

Different than in our previous announcement here the Austin location for packet pick-up and pre-registration has changed to:

REI (601 N. Lamar), Thurs. Mar. 22 (Noon – 9:00 PM)

Join us Saturday, March 24, 2012, in the Texas Hill Country for a ride already touted as “an iconic Texas ride.” We’ve seen rapid growth: 1130 riders enjoyed the ride and post-ride festivities in 2011.

An added 85-mile route will provide new challenges while we continue the existing 62, 42, 30, and 10-mile routes. With a 9:00 AM staggered start, all routes start/end on the LBJ Ranch air strip, and traverse bucolic country lanes. Several restored rural schools serve as rest stops. It gives true meaning to our tag line: “A Ride to Preserve History.”

We want all levels of riders to come out and make it a family event. To facilitate this, we’re offering discounted registration fees:

  • Adults: Through Feb. 29, 2012, $40; Mar. 1 – Mar. 23, $45; Mar. 24, $50
  • Family (3 or more riders): Through Feb. 29, 2012, $90; Mar. 1 – Mar. 23, $100; Mar. 24 – $110
  • Youth (12 or younger): Through Feb. 29, 2012, $20; Mar. 1 – Mar. 24, $25
  • Tandem: Through Feb. 29, 2012, $70; Mar. 1 – Mar. 23, $80; Mar. 24 – $90

Packet pick-up and pre-registration:

  • San Antonio: Ride Away Bicycles (Huebner Oaks Shopping Center), Tues. Mar. 20 (Noon – 7:00 PM)
  • Austin: REI (601 N. Lamar), Thurs. Mar. 22 (Noon – 9:00 PM)
  • Fredericksburg: Hill Country Bicycle Works (702 E. Main), Fri., Mar. 23 (3:00 PM – 7:00 PM)

A commemorative cycle jersey again will be offered for the 2012 event. Furnished by Champ-Systems, a leader in the sports apparel industry, it will be available on-line when you register (price: $85), or may be purchased (beginning Jan. 15) at Mellow Johnny’s in Austin and Ride Away Bicycles in San Antonio. These stunning jerseys have become collector’s items!

Following the ride, enjoy a delicious meal, hang with friends and fellow cyclists in the expansive food tent, and visit some of the vendor booths we’ll have, located next to the food area.

At 2:30 PM, don’t miss the Luci Baines Johnson-led tour of the historical landmarks on the Ranch. This look at the Johnson family legacy is included in the main rider registration fee – or you can register for this tour only – cost is the same. Hear Presidential history from someone who lived it! In addition, take a Ranger-led tour of the restored rooms in the Texas White House – also included for registered riders.

Our 36th President loved his Ranch on the Pedernales River. He often conducted Presidential business under the ancient live oak trees, and sought solace from the rigors of the Presidency.

As President Johnson told visitors to his beloved Hill Country ranch, “All the world is welcome here!” We want riders in the 5th Annual LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour to feel the same warm welcome and sense of Presidential history as those who came before them.
